Quick guide to Middleton

Middleton is a densely populated town 4.7 miles from Rochdale and 5 miles from Manchester. It has a population of 45,580[1] and the town centre has a retail catchment area of over 313,000[2] people which extends into Manchester and into nearby Rochdale and Oldham. Of this catchment area Middleton Town Centre attracts a market potential of £93.7million, £49.7millon of which is from its primary catchment, representing a market share of 2.5%[3].

Middleton is an area of contrasts; it has extremely affluent areas along side areas of deprivation. The average weekly household income ranges from £340 (West Middleton) to £500 (South Middleton)[4].
The average spend per visitor to the town centre was £20.36[5] and that of those visiting the shopping centre 91% purchase goods at Tesco.

Middleton Town Centre has lots to offer shoppers and those in search of entertainment with lively pubs, restaurants and plays and is seeing regeneration on a scale not seen for decades.

The opening of the new £13million Middleton Arena and the development of a new Tesco Eco-store together with the development of a new Joint Service Centre will act as catalysts for change to enable the long term sustainability of the town centre.

Middleton Gardens underwent an award winning renovation in 2002 which created a modern town square and entertainment circle. It is envisaged the outer area of the gardens will be completed following the supermarket development which will go along way to creating a strong foundation for the new Middleton Market.

St. Leonards Church, Middleton

Much of Middleton's built environment is characterised by its 19th century red-brick terraced houses, the infrastructure that was built to support these and the town's former cotton mills. The skyline is marked by St. Leonard's Church (shown top right).

The Church of St Leonard

The "Flodden Window", in the church's sanctuary, is thought to be the oldest war memorial in the United Kingdom. It memorialises on it the names of the archers of Middleton who fought at the Battle of Flodden Field (1513), the largest battle ever fought between the then kingdoms of Scotland and England.

In addition to these new developments the town centre benefits from the Middleton Shopping Centre which covers three floors and many household names. The centre recently underwent an extensive renovation and an extension with plans to extend further in coming years to attract higher quality retailers. Middleton Bus Station was replaced with a new flagship station in 2005.

Middleton town centre is a mixed picture and there are areas which will require major intervention such as Market Place and to a lesser extent Wood Street. There is an opportunity to build on the strong independent retailer presence in the town centre and to maximise the benefits of Long Street conservation area, which has the potential to bring increased visitors to the town centre.

This is an exciting time for Middleton Town Centre, but also a challenging one. By working in partnership Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and Middleton Town Centre Management Company Ltd will work to create a town centre which is vibrant, able to compete and attract new visitors in what will continue to be a challenging economic climate.
